How to Evaluate Solar Panel Suppliers in China: A Buyer's Checklist
China produces over 80% of the world's solar panels, but the quality gap between top-tier manufacturers and opportunistic traders is enormous. For EPC contractors and distributors sourcing from China for the first time — or those burned by a previous supplier — having a systematic evaluation framework is essential.
1. Verify Certifications — Don't Just Look at the Logo
A PDF of an IEC 61215 certificate is easy to fake. Always verify certifications directly on the issuing body's website. TUV Rheinland, TUV SUD, CSA, and DEKRA all maintain public certificate databases. For the EU market, confirm that the module is listed in the specific wattage class you're buying.
2. Factory Audit: Capacity vs. Reality
A factory claiming 2GW annual capacity should operate at minimum 4-5 production lines with visible automation. Key things to check during a factory visit: Are lines running at full speed? Is the warehouse stocked with consistent raw materials? Is EL testing performed on every module or just batch samples?
3. Bill of Materials Transparency
A reputable manufacturer will provide a full BOM breakdown: cell supplier and grade, encapsulant, backsheet brand, junction box brand, frame alloy specification. If a supplier refuses to disclose their cell source or says 'it varies,' that's a red flag.
4. Production Monitoring and QC
Insist on: pre-production samples for your approval; in-line EL and flash testing data; pre-shipment inspection by a third party (TUV, SGS, Bureau Veritas); container loading supervision. The cost of third-party inspection is negligible compared to the cost of receiving defective panels.
5. Commercial Terms That Protect You
Always structure payment with a 30% deposit and 70% against the bill of lading copy or LC at sight. Include a performance guarantee clause. Warranty should be backed by a PV manufacturer's warranty insurance policy, not just the factory's promise.
